Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of titanium that replace missing or severely decayed teeth. Implants offer a strong, sturdy foundation for artificial replacement teeth so you can feel confident about your smile.
If you’re missing permanent teeth, dental implants help:
Dental implants are an alternative to dentures and stay firmly in place when you eat, brush your teeth, and sleep.
After reviewing your medical and dental history, completing a dental examination, and taking X-rays, your dentist lets you know if you’re a good candidate for dental implants. If you’re missing teeth but have healthy gums and a strong jawbone, you’re likely a good candidate for the procedure. Bone grafting is an option to restore and strengthen weak bone if necessary.
You must be willing to undergo several dental visits spaced a couple months apart. If you’re a heavy smoker or have uncontrolled diabetes or heart disease, you might not be a good candidate for dental implants. Your dentist can let you know for sure.
If you and your Delray Medical & Dental provider determine dental implants are right for you, the first step is placing the dental implants into your jawbone. If you require bone grafting, your dentist completes this step prior to dental implant placement. You must wait about 6-12 weeks for the implants to heal while bone grows around them to secure the implants in place.
During a separate appointment, your dentist places small connector posts to the implants that securely fasten to new artificial teeth. Your provider takes impressions or digital scans of your mouth so a dental lab can fabricate custom-made artificial tooth replacement.
When the new teeth are ready, your dentist secures them permanently in place for long-lasting results. Your artificial teeth look, feel, and function just like natural surrounding teeth.
To properly care for dental implants, brush your teeth at least twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste. Floss every day and see your dentist every six months for routine cleanings and dental exams. Avoid chewing on hard candies, ice, and other hard objects.
Don’t let missing teeth ruin your smile when a full set of natural-looking implants are within reach. Request a dental implant consultation with Delray Medical & Dental over the phone or online today.
